South Thames College students help teach citizenship
10:00am Saturday 13th March 2010
Students at South Thames College are helping to deliver a Junior Citizenship Programme in Wandsworth.
The scheme, now in its 23rd year, allows students to help educate primary school pupils on the emergency services.
cenarios vary from a stranger in the street to rail and water safety. Amongst other topics, children are educated about substances, vandalism and first aid.
Each year the scheme is delivered to over 2000 primary school children aged between nine and twelve across the borough.
Tatiana Martins, student, said: “It has taught me how to act professionally, helped my timekeeping and I now understand how the emergency services respond to situations.”
Paul Cummins, of the London Fire Brigade, added: “It’s definitely preparing them for working life in a pressurised environment”.
The programme will move to the Atheldene Centre in Wandsworth for the next three years.
